HIVSA and the Discovery Trust – mobilising communities to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake in sub-district G of the City of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on lives across the world.

It is one of the biggest threats to humanity at the moment. At the end of October 2021, South Africa had vaccinated 12, 620, 892 million South Africans with the first dose of vaccines, which is approximately 21% of the population, which falls below the required numbers needed to reach population immunity.

In partnership with the Discovery Trust, HIVSA is working with community-based organisations (CBOs) in the sub-district G (Orange farm, Grasmere, Lenasia, Lawley, and surrounding areas) of the City of Johannesburg, to combat vaccine hesitancy by mobilising communities to vaccinate against COVID-19.

The project will work with out- of - work youth in the area, who will go from door to door to share COVID-19 vaccination information and refer unvaccinated community members from the age of 12, to their nearest vaccination sites, in collaboration with the Department of Health.
