Nonhlanhla Mnyanda’s Journey with HIVSA

From Adversity to Empowerment: A Journey of Hope and Resilience

Meet Nonhlanhla Mnyanda, a 23-year-old from Sebokeng, whose life story is a testament to the power of resilience and the transformative impact of HIVSA’s programs.

A Challenging Start Nonhlanhla grew up in a small family with her younger brother, raised by their single mother. Despite her mother’s best efforts, financial struggles often meant that Nonhlanhla missed out on basic necessities, including school activities and even sanitary products. The lack of open communication at home also left her without guidance on critical aspects of growing up, like menstrual hygiene.

Finding Support through HIVSA In 2019, Nonhlanhla’s life began to change when she was introduced to HIVSA’s Preventing HIV/AIDS in Vulnerable Populations (PHVP) program at The Healing Hands (THH), a Community Based Organisation (CBO) in Sebokeng, which has been an implementing partner of HIVSA’s for more than 5 years now, through Miss Morwesi, a Community Care Worker and long-time family friend. This connection came at a critical time when Nonhlanhla, like many young girls in disadvantaged communities, faced numerous challenges. Through the program, she gained the support and guidance she desperately needed, including participating in the DREAMS Let’s Talk sessions that helped improve her relationship with her mother.

The Impact of Choma Magazine and SEF Project Nonhlanhla also participated in a focus group for Choma Magazine, where she appreciated the tips on fashion and self-care. Although her knowledge of Choma was limited, the experience added to her growing confidence and understanding of health and wellness.

Her journey took another positive turn when she joined the SEF project in 2023. The SEF project, funded through the IDC (Industrial Development Corporation) is part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES) program, and provides short term employment opportunities where young people in particular can be exposed to the world of work, gain valuable skills and an income to provide relief from unemployment. Although it was her first exposure to a workplace, Nonhlanhla quickly adapted with the support of her line manager and colleagues. The SEF project not only provided her with valuable skills but also gave her a renewed sense of purpose following the loss of her mother.

Personal Growth and Future Aspirations Since becoming involved with HIVSA, Nonhlanhla has grown immensely. She now speaks with confidence and has gained knowledge about HIV/AIDS and mental wellbeing. Despite the setbacks, including her mother’s passing during her Grade 12 year, she remains hopeful for a brighter future. Her goal is to upgrade her matric results and pursue a Degree in Social Work, a dream she plans to achieve with the help of her SEF stipend.

A Message of Encouragement Nonhlanhla’s journey is a powerful reminder that, with determination and the right support, one can overcome any obstacle. She advises other young people in similar situations to seek help, work hard, and never give up on their dreams.

Closing Thoughts “My journey has shown me that nothing ever lasts—today you may feel down and think there’s no way out, but with determination and support, you can overcome any obstacle.”

Nonhlanhla’s story is a shining example of how HIVSA’s programs can change lives, offering hope and empowerment to those who need it most. We are proud to share her success and look forward to witnessing her continued growth and achievements.
