The Occupational Certificate: Social Counselling Support Worker is a QCTO-registered occupational qualification designed to equip learners with the knowledge, practical skills, and workplace experience required to provide basic supportive counselling services within community, health, education, social development, and related settings. The qualification prepares learners to assist individuals experiencing personal, social, emotional, or psychosocial challenges by providing supportive counselling, raising awareness of available services, and referring clients to appropriate professional and community-based support systems.
This qualification addresses the growing need for trained and recognised counselling support personnel in South Africa, particularly in communities where access to professional social workers, psychologists, and other mental health practitioners may be limited. It establishes a consistent national standard for counselling support services and contributes to improved access to psychosocial support and referral services.
Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:
Conduct basic screening and assessment of client wellbeing within the scope of supportive counselling.

It also provides a progression route into higher-level counselling qualifications, including the Occupational Certificate: Social Counselling Worker (NQF Level 5).
